Distance recorder or shotgun mic
Hi,
Could you recommend a recorder that will work well picking sound from 10-30m away? I've moved to the area with few houses not far away. I thought of leaving the recorder on the window sill outside for couple of nights see if it picks anything from houses opposite. Some of them leave windows open
I'm actually looking for few options to purchase.
1) USB or some kind of mini recorder that I can ''drop'' near the house and collect in the morning. I've had one before, but wasn't happy with quality as it had a lot of self noise.
2) Recorder that will be able to pick from 10-30m probably with some kind of directional mic, I think it's called cardioid microphone. Or the recorder that I can connect to such microphone.
3) A ''shotgun'' mic that can give live listening option, doesn't need to record.
Budget would be around £200.

1) USB stick sure is the best solution for this purpose, these work pretty well for me. The newest one (8gb) has "Tammano" printed on it, I bought it at Amazon Germany https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00YV6 ... UTF8&psc=1
The older two (4gb) have no brand label on them but all 3 show "Actions HS USB FlashDisk" in Windows Explorer"
The blue one shows the only problem they seem to have after some time ... should be fixable by some sticky tape.
2) Definitely my Olympus LS-5 It is old but the newer ones should be fine or even better, too.

Re: Distance recorder or shotgun mic
If you have line-of-sight to the target area I would recommend a shotgun mic. They do very well at picking up sounds around 100 meters or less. Can get a shotgun microphone and recorder for around 60 or so. They will pick up sounds within a target area, but sound quality is degraded the further away you can point it to the target area and will pick up more ambient noise. Price can vary with quality, but most well reviewed low-end products do a good job.

Additionally you can add a line-in amplifier to the shotgun mic which could help with pulling in sounds.

Re: Distance recorder or shotgun mic
Maybe I'm stupid, I read the following from you "I tested the shotgun, plug directly into my Android laptop, recording, the sound is not amplified sound too weak is disgusting! Ilistenmyneighbor wrote: ↑18 Jun 2023 20:51if it didn't work do you really think i would post everything i wrote? are you stupid or what
recommend a dictaphone instead!"
In this thread
viewtopic.php?p=89542#p89542..
So I thought it wasn't really working for you.
However, even if it was a misunderstanding I have always been respectful and I'd also expect you to be respectful with others too.

Re: Distance recorder or shotgun mic
I don't own any of this equipment but I would believe you need to have the olympus recording the entire time if using 3.5mm jack.
There may be some hack for bluetooth compatibility with Galaxy watch and a dictaphone that has bluetooth to make the Galaxy watch and dictaphone communicate together over bluetooth but that is way outside my skill set. I can barely get amazon echo working with bluetooth.
